Some protest songs shout at power. This one turns its back on it.
The new single from Oslo's Stale Jan hands the microphone to French artist Angie Robba, recording as Blackbird, and she sings it like someone who has decided something. Underneath her is a pop-rock broadside — distorted bass, bold guitars, a chorus built for a crowd, and a lyric that pits private tenderness against public cruelty. The verses catalogue the machinery of fear: borders, flags, myths of blood and soil, children taught what to be afraid of. The choruses answer with something smaller and much harder to legislate.

Released independently on Stale Jan's own StaleSounds label, "The Sirens" is his 30th release since debuting in late 2024, and continues a run of collaborations that have become the project's most-streamed work.
The Blackbird in the Artwork
Look at the window. One lit room in a wall of cold brick, curtains parted just enough to let the warmth out — the private tenderness the song defends, surrounded by the architecture of the state.
And look again at the title block: the blackbird. It is not a coincidence or a decoration. It is the feature credit, drawn into the artwork — Angie Robba records as Blackbird, and the bird sits above the song's name the way her voice carries the song. In European folk song the blackbird is the voice that keeps singing after dark; here it is the voice of the song itself.

"I sent Angie the song not really knowing what would come back. What came back was better than what I wrote. She doesn't perform these words, she means them — there's a steel in her voice I couldn't have faked, and the moment I heard the first take I knew the song was hers to sing."

Hailing from Norway, Stale Jan is an indie-rock creative with a knack for oozing his tracks with an undeniable sonic catharsis and contemporary pull. Since releasing his debut in 2024, he has gone on to release a string of standout tracks, all of which have manifested in Jan receiving well-earned attention as a rising star.
With an approach consisting of carefully measured song structures, melodies and forward-thinking production values, his stadium-sized anthems feel effortlessly seismic and intimately familiar.
